Lloret de Mar was imbued with the spirit of the Caribbean this past weekend, with Cuban music taking centre stage. The Indiano market kicked off a weekend with more than 50 different proposals, where the crowds of visitors were able to enjoy craft stalls and products linked to overseas trade, enlivened by travelling shows and musical and dance entertainment. It is estimated that more than 50,000 visitors visited the fair over the weekend. The Mayor of Lloret, Adrià Lamelas, explained that “The Americanos Fair is a good opportunity to showcase and share our historical heritage”.
On the evening of Friday 14 June, some 4,000 people attended the concert by the group “David Calzado y su Charanga Havanera” on the stage set up on the seafront promenade, and the highlight of the fair was the performance by the Grammy award-winning group “Los Van Van”, which brought together and entertained nearly 9,000 people. Both groups, currently on a European tour, have a long musical career and have put Lloret de Mar on the world map of Caribbean music. The last concert was given by the havaneres group Arjau, which closed the performances with a great success of attendance.
This year the Americanos Fair also offered interesting proposals linked to cocktails, recalling that some of the best cocktail makers in history come from or have a direct link to Lloret de Mar. The first edition of the Golden Daiquiri competition was held on Thursday 13 June. The Councillor for Promoting the City, Marina Nicolàs, explains that “This competition aims to promote this cocktail with Lloret roots, as well as local bartenders”. The winner was Daniel Serrano from the L’Azure hotel, who with this victory secures a place in the “King of the Daiquiri” competition to be held at the Floridita in Havana, organised by the National Association of Cuban Bartenders.
The councillor gave a very positive assessment of this eleventh edition: “This has undoubtedly been the largest and most successful edition of all those held so far, and has enabled us to achieve the twofold objective of highlighting Lloret de Mar’s Indiano legacy and generating economic activity ahead of the start of the tourist season”.
