The Board of Directors of the Lloret de Mar Hotels Association has taken the decision to pause the project to install a desalination plant to supply water to tourist accommodation swimming pools. The rains this May have contributed to an increase in the water reserves of the Ter-Llobregat system that supplies the municipality. This has resulted in a return to the exceptional phase, in which the use of drinking water for refilling tourist accommodation pools is authorised. Therefore, the water supply is guaranteed, although it will have to be used very responsibly. It is expected that this phase will continue throughout the summer and that there will be no more severe restrictions until at least January 2025.
The desalination plant project is not cancelled, but its implementation is postponed until at least 2025. Over the next few months, permits will be prepared for a definitive location which, this season, would have been installed in a temporary site at the end of the seafront promenade. To avoid the visual and operational impact on the seafront, alternative locations are being studied (one of the options could be in the vicinity of the Lloret de Mar WWTP).
Lloret de Mar Town Council will continue to be fully involved in this process. In fact, the council will continue to work on its own measures to optimise water use. Reducing dependence on mains water remains a priority to ensure sustainability.
