As part of the Lloret Sostenible project, Lloret Turisme has launched a carbon footprint calculator, which is now available to visitors to the destination who wish to find out the impact of their stay in Lloret de Mar and contribute directly to social and environmental projects promoted in the municipality.
The new, fully digital tool allows tourists to calculate the emissions generated by their holiday through a short questionnaire which asks for: the mode of transport used to get to Lloret de Mar, the home town, the total number of nights spent at the destination and the number of people who took part in the trip.
Using this information, the tool calculates the tonnes of CO2 generated by the holiday and suggests a recommended donation amount for local charitable and environmental projects, although it is the user who ultimately decides how much they wish to contribute.
The initiative is part of Lloret de Mar’s sustainability strategy and represents a new step towards a more responsible tourism model, in which visitors can voluntarily contribute to creating a positive impact on the local area and community. Beyond calculating emissions, the platform aims to raise visitors’ awareness of the environmental impact of their travel and encourage a more conscious attitude during their stay.
In the words of Elizabeth Keegan: “With this platform, we want to improve the social balance of tourism in Lloret and make it easier for visitors to contribute in a simple and transparent way to initiatives that have a direct return for the local community. The donations made are given in full to the chosen projects, and donors receive a donation certificate by email, issued by Bioscore Sustainability, which attests to the transparency of their contribution.”
The platform currently offers the option to contribute financially to the Camina project, promoted by the Sports and Wellbeing and Family departments of Lloret Town Council, which aims to guarantee access to physical activity for children and young people from Lloret aged 6 to 18, and new projects will be added shortly. The Councillor for Tourism, Cristina Aymerich, has described the initiative as “very positive” and points out that “this tool allows us to continue moving towards a more responsible tourism model, in which visitors can voluntarily get involved in projects that generate social and environmental benefits for Lloret. The Camina programme is a good example, as it helps to ensure that all children and young people have access to sport.”
Access to the calculator (available here) can be found via a link accessible from the lloretdemar.org website, social media, physical publications and QR codes, which can be found, for example, at tourist information offices and in accommodation establishments.
This initiative reinforces the Lloret Sostenible by Bioscore project and consolidates the destination’s commitment to incorporating innovative tools that contribute to more responsible tourism management.
