Lloret de Mar has once again established itself as the setting for an international film shoot with the Netflix production “The Empress”, which has chosen various iconic locations in the municipality to shoot scenes for its third season.
The Empress is a German historical and romantic drama miniseries from 2022, produced by the streaming platform Netflix. It stars Devrim Lingnau, Philip Froissant, Melika Foroutan and Svenja Jung.
The six-day shoot has generated an estimated direct economic impact of €220,000. This figure includes the production team’s expenditure on accommodation, catering, transport, logistics and security services. In addition, there is the indirect impact of significant on-screen promotion of Lloret’s locations worldwide.
The project mobilised dozens of international professionals, a total of 150 people, and helped to boost economic activity in the mid-season. The locations used for filming were Cala Sa Boadella, the Santa Clotilde Gardens and the Casa de Can Roviralta.
In the words of the manager of Lloret Turisme, Elizabeth Keegan: “This shoot consolidates Lloret de Mar’s position as an international film set on the Costa Brava and joins other blockbusters such as House of the Dragon and Uncharted. Lloret de Mar thus reaffirms its commitment to cultural, economic and tourist promotion through its support for audiovisual initiatives that generate wealth, employment and international exposure”.
In addition, as part of its efforts to promote the region as a filming location, the Lloret Film Office took part last week in a famtrip organised by the Catalunya Film Commission, following the Shooting Locations Marketplace workshop in Valladolid, which brought eight location scouts from the US, the UK and the Netherlands to the destination to visit different locations.
This year, the Lloret Film Office celebrated 20 years of activity, with more than 800 film shoots and the launch of a new website: lloretfilmoffice.org
